Find out how kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, is being used in their mission work in Japan.
Translated as ‘golden joinery’, kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Rather than discarding of the broken pieces, the object is restored — not by hiding the fracture and breaks, but by intentionally emphasizing ‘scars’ with gold, silver or platinum.
We have talked about kintsugi in my classes since January. the question — what shame, brokenness and hurts do you carry? One woman recently lost her husband; another’s 48-year-old sister just had a stroke after which they discovered a rare disease; another has had no contact with her sister for the past 10 years; another’s mom criticized and put her down her whole life. It has been a time of reflection, tears, compassion, empathy and acceptance. the loving embrace of community has brought a level of healing. I am grateful to the Lord for the unprecedented depth of sharing among the moms. And isn’t this what Jesus does for us? He takes the ashes of our brokenness and turns them into beautiful crowns. the greater the brokenness, the greater the beauty. We finished by talking about the incurable scar of sin that only Jesus can heal. I invited them to ask Jesus to cover their sin with this blood, heal their broken hearts and receive God’s golden repair!
