Let’s Make Dad Smile Today

by Joy Addiss, Preschool Director

An interesting thing happened in the gym this morning…

As I disciplined a group of 4 boys who were taunting and baiting a younger friend, I began to cry.  I told them how much it hurts me to see them treating their friend like that because I love them all so much and see all of us as one big family.  I expect them to love one another and take care of each other even as I have loved and cared for them as their teacher.  It breaks my heart to watch them being mean and sassy to each other.  My deepest desire is to see them getting along and working together as friends and siblings at preschool. I want everyone to love coming to school and being here.
They were stunned to see me crying so much I could barely talk…  I’m usually all smiley and happy.  I told them to always remember that each of them is special and needs to be treated that way, even if they don’t understand or like the other person very much.
As I reflected on this encounter, I heard Father God saying to me, even as the seasons are changing at KUC Preschool and our children are getting ready for the biggest changes of their lives to this point…  the 3s are becoming the “big kids” and the 4s will be leaving to kindergarten, everyone is feeling a little bit out of place and stressed with new and different emotions.
As members of God’s family, we also break our Father’s heart when we don’t get along and care for one another.  Many of our staff and members are new and trying to find their place among the staff and members who have been here a long time.
I pray that we choose to make Father God smile and not cry as we interact with one another…  like our preschool children, we need to remember that God has called each of us to KUC and placed us within this Body at this time.  We may not know someone very well, we may not appreciate their strengths and weaknesses very much but we need to love and care for each other even as our heavenly Father loves and cares for us because we do know this about every person in the church…  God made him/her as special as you are and he/she is dearly loved by Him.
I don’t ever want to stand before God and be stunned by how much I have broken His heart because of the way I have treated someone else in our family!  Let’s make Dad smile by how we love and care for one another…  after all, He went bankrupt in heaven to make us a family.
1 John 3:1-3
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God, and such we are.  For this reason the world does not know us, because it does not know Him.  Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be.  We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.  And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
